Weekly Check-up #3: Self-care

Welcome back!!! Here are some links in case you forgot to check out last week’s or the very first one. I am on vacation this week. It’s a much needed vacation. I know you know exactly how that feels. I want to share some thoughts and suggestions while I am on this vacation.

Life moves at light speed and we seem to always forget about our own self care. We spend a lot of our lives taking care of family, friends, co-workers and customers. It becomes so hectic that we can lose sight of our own happiness. It’s ok that we take care of others but it’s not ok to forget about our own needs. I want to share with you some tips I have used in my life.

Time for your self-care

It might always seem that there is no time but the truth is that there is always time. The issue is that we don’t see the time or recognize it. Here’s a few examples of times that we don’t realize:

  • Stopped at a red light
  • Long distance driving
  • Riding the elevator
  • Using the restroom
  • etc…

How to self-care

There are several ways or techniques to perform the self-care of your choice. I am not a doctor or a professional. I have used several techniques that I want to share with you:

  • Mediate for a few minutes. Stop what you are doing and take a moment to listen to your surroundings. Being present in the moment is the most important in this. Stress loves it when we are stuck in the past and / or future
  • Listen to your favorite song(s)
  • Play video games to help reduce stress and frustration
  • Take a few minutes and go for a walk. While on the walk, don’t think about anything expect for you. If you are not 100%, then you can’t give others 100% either.

These are just a few examples of the ways I do my self-care. What works for me will not always work for others. It’s important for you to find your own ways to do self-care. There are apps, blogs and books that can give you unless ideas. You need to take the first step towards your self-care and find what works for you. Don’t put this off any longer.
