Life’s Poker Game

Life is very complicated and is always evolving. Just when you think you have your life figured out, it throws you a twist and changes course. This can be very frustrating and depressing to the point that you just want to give up. Since there is not an absolute solution that works 100% in everyone’s life, I want to offer you a different point of view. My suggestion is to look at life like a game of poker. Yes, you read that right, and you will understand why in the end. Let’s start.

There are many times in life when you wonder if you need to make a change or not. This
change could be a job, relationship, or anything else that is causing frustration in your life. The big question about the change in this situation is “What if I am wrong?” In poker, if you are unsure of the hand you are dealt with, you will “Check”. This allows you to wait and see if the situation will improve in your favor. A lot of times in life, this is exactly what you have to do. You will have to be patient until the right opportunity and decision appears.

There will be times when you want to make a change with as little risk as possible. This
is a very smart and cautious move to make. There is potential for success and this small, yet simple, change is what you might need to reach the next level that you desire. Always striving for improvement involves some level of risk. The bigger improvements you search for will have the larger level of risk. With poker, you can “Raise” the bet to try increasing the odds in your favor. Raising the bet does not always mean that you will succeed with the cards in your hand, but it is a risk that needs to be taken in order to get the change that you desire.

All In

There comes a time in everyone’s life when an opportunity arises that needs to be captured now. You know that this is the positive change you need because you feel it in your heart and soul. You feel that this needs to happen now before you regret it. During this time, you might not have a lot of support but you need to do it for you and for anyone else. You will know exactly what needs to be done when this situation happens to you. Just like in poker, you go “All In” when you know that you have the best hand to win. You have the confidence and knowledge to know that it is the best thing to do. These situations in life are rare and need to be captured when they appear.

Now there will be times in life where you need to take a step back and analyze your
situation. This could be as simple as writing the pros and cons of the situation or writing a list of your priorities. It could also require help from friends, family, or some form of a professional. Either way, this is an important step to help you get back on track and sort things out. No one likes going through this and the best part of this process is that you are not alone.

Every player in poker has to “Fold” the hand they have at some point in the game. Sometimes it is because they know their hand does not give them the best opportunity to succeed. Other times, it is so that they can watch and analyze their situation amongst the other players. The players, just like us in life, do not always want to fold their hand but they know it is necessary to reach their ultimate goal.

We all make mistakes, whether in a game of poker or in our lives. The most important
thing is to learn from our mistakes and never ever give up, even during our toughest times in life. When life throws you that curve ball, take all the time needed to decide the correct action for the situation. Life, like poker, is a game of patience and opportunity. Always be ready to seize it. Until my next blog post… Share. Inspire. Conquer.
